6 cylinder engine colours

Can anyone help with colours used on 6 cylinder engines.
I've noticed quite a few variations and wonder if they were all painted
a standard colour originally and have suffered aftermarket indignities, or
if it might have been a question of whatever paint pot was at hand etc.
