I agree, I got a fairly good result on my 408 using one of those old SPQR (?) adjusters when the valves were hot and doing a bank at a time (then running to get the other bank back up to temperature).
When I did them conventionally with the engine running, I got the best result but quite a lot of engine oil seemed to find its way on to the exhaust mannifolds . . .
