Default Oily job

Also as Greg implies, the best way of getting really good results is to adjust them withe the engine running! A large piece of cardboard in front of you helps!.
Great fun but a bit OTT.

I agree, I got a fairly good result on my 408 using one of those old SPQR (?) adjusters when the valves were hot and doing a bank at a time (then running to get the other bank back up to temperature).

When I did them conventionally with the engine running, I got the best result but quite a lot of engine oil seemed to find its way on to the exhaust mannifolds . . .

Default 407 tappet adjustment

Thanks Nick and Greg. Sounds like i need to get a new supply of Swarfega if I'm to do it with the engine running ! Beats making mud pies though by the sound of it !

A loan to copy (or copy), of the Newnes Repair Manual would be much appreciated Greg. Thanks.
