Default Bristol 411

Hello,
so i found a dream in form of a Bristol 411 and the owner will probably sell this car.
I am a beginner in british cars and normally i'm collecting alfa romeos.
So i have a question and i cant find a register or any information.
Is the Car -i couldn't make a picture cause of the darkness in the garage.
date of registration: 02/03/1972
Engine No E383359
chassis No 411760498

a serie 2 or 3?

Whats "normaly" the market price for a unrestored used and running car in a very good condition, about 60000 miles?

Thanks for your help.

Hello,

may I ask where is the car today (nation, for example)? A picture, at least
of the front of the car, would be very important. The chassis number looks a
bit 'long'....

I believe the first three digits,...411 are the model, the rest seem to be in line with other 411 chassis numbers at the BOC site.

Hi,

I do not think that your chassis number is correct.
The engine number fits as E383358 was fitted to a 411 series 2 in 1972
engine numbers do not go in sequence but that engine went into chassis
number
411 S2 7605101 your chassis number appears to have one number missing,
it should read as above. It could however be right and unlisted as the
chassis number
before the one listed has only 6 numerals ie 411s2 760395
I hope this is helpful.

Thanks for your quick answers.

I compared the dates below with the " vehicle registration document" from great britain once again. So this dates are right!!!
Could a british document be incorrect?

So the car is located in germany now. So i hope, it will be a series 2 which suits better to me than a series 3 (but that's a matter of taste)

Will take pics next week.

The question of market value is difficult to answer without a thorough inspection of the car.

As a guide, a perfect example that needs no work is probably worth about £25,000.

These cars are relatively simple and easy to work on so restoration costs would be no more than most other contemporary classic cars. I believe all vital parts are still available, but not the bumper bars!

Hello,
as i announced, i took photos of the Car. Its a serie 2.
Firstly i checked the numbers of the badge in the engine bay:
Typ 411
chassis-no. 760498
engine-no. E783-359
Car is a little bit rusty, but he still runs!
Here the pics. Needs a careful consideration to buy or not.

Default 411 S2 7604.98

Gunther

looks ok to me.

most 411 people reckon the S2 is the one to have.

Nice to find yet another "unknown" Bristol via this forum.

The chassis number fits the sequence between 7603.95 and 7605.101

Only the first 4 numbers are in direct sequence, the last 3 go up in 3s, as I expect most of you know. The reason for this little "trick" I leave up to people's imagination.

By the way the engine number will be E 383-359, not E 783-359, as 383 is the engine size in cubic inches. Probably the best Chrysler engine fitted to any Bristol - how's that for controversy!

best of luck with it.

I do know some people in Germany who might be able to help you with it.

Ha ha, I think that should read
"most 411 S2 people reckon the S2 is the one to have"

Everyone knows the S5 is the best 411, although I suppose it has been eclipsed by the S6!

Frankly I don't know how anyone could determine the condition of the car from those photos. It could be all fine, but then it could just as easily require a lot of work costing many thousands of euros.

Ideally you need to get it on a hoist or over a pit and check thoroughly underneath. Would be a good idea to do a compression text on each of the engine cylinders.

What's the oil pressure reading when cold and at normal running temp?

Does everything work? heater, wipers, electric windows, cooling fans, brakes!

If it hasn't been used for a long time there's a good chance the brake caliper pistons will be rusty and the calipers will need to be overhauled and/or the master cylinder.

Any competent mechanic should be able to do an inspection - doesn't really have to be a Bristol specialist. However, someone who doesn't know Bristols would not know to check the top and bottom front coil spring seats are okay. see this thread

Hello Andrew,

you're right, the engine number is E 383-359.
Kevin you're also right. These pics can only show an impression, may be -cause of the external rust- it's a "biscuit-car", as we say in german for the bodywork, when it's over.

What you see is mostly the top of an iceberg and it's the question of a total restoration or perhaps you can leave the car in the condition as it is. (By the way, the car was driven till december 09)

I think, the technical/mechanical part is relatively easy to restore.

For me, it's not only the question of the "selling price" in relation to the restoration costs for this rare car.
Let you know my decision in the next days.
Thank for your replies.

Günter
