Speedo Cable Route

I have just spent some time fitting a new inner and outer speedo cable which I found to be quite difficult.The reason for this is that I am quite possibly feeding the cable through the firewall in the wrong place. On my car there is a grommet
near the fan blower and that hole feeds into the area where the air chamber directs air from the screen to the fresh air ducts, There is then another hole on the other side of the chamber that feed into the rear of the dashboard. Both these holes are very poorly formed and dont look original.

My question to fellow 411 owners is where does your speedo cable pass through the firewall ?
