Default 406 wheels / hubcaps

help needed
I am restoring a 406 which came with 5 wheels which had little rubber buffers in the three holes
which I assumed were used to. rest the hubcap on

I was told that there are two types of cap arrangement, I got some hub caps which I was assured were for a 406 they only have two little holes in them which I assume take the round Bristol disc

having just got round to looking at fitting the caps it's clear they will not fit the wheels as there aren't ant round spigots for the cap to clip over

so the help I need is pictures and dimensions of the screw type cap fitting or details of how the clip type works

any one help

I'm not far from Warwick

The 406 had an insert called a spider that went in the middle of the wheel. The chrome dished hubcap was held by a large knurled edged piece that carried the Bristol badge. This screwed into the spider. There was a polythene washer between the hub cap and the badge carrier. The wheels also had chrome embellishment rings.

Default 406 hubcaps

406 hubcaps have a central Medallion which rotates, Undoing a screw which locates into an aluminium detail in the wheel centre.
So the hubcap is screwed down onto the rubber buffers. The earlier 2 L ones all have a pop on hubcap which just springs over three nipples.

These are threaded into the three holes you have seen with the rubber buffers in. I fitted 406 wheels to my 400 (They are 4 1/2 J, slightly wider and suit my Dunlop radials fine.)and simply threaded the three holes, had some nipples turned up on the lathe and screwed them in. Result. Sounds like you need the 406 type hubcap and the central aluminium boss which they thread into.
If you see what I mean!

Mike406,
see attached page from the 406 Spare Handbook which clearly shows what was originally fitted.
It sounds like the hubcaps you bought are not for a 406 and you need items

I hope this helps

I have a bent original hub disc and a good badge surround that I would be willing to part with. Just need to find them... May also be able to help out with badges.

cheers Mike

I seem to remember the Volvo 144 had a similar arrangement. May be worth investigating dimensions of the spider they used

does anyone have the dimensions of the round "bollard" which holds the clip-on style hub caps as it seems I have bolt-on style wheels and clip-om style caps and badges
