Hi I'd be interested to know how the original poster got on with solving his problem, whether he went for the 123 system or not?
I traced a pre-ignition problem recently to worn spring posts. Both springs were intact. The lighter spring was slightly loose whilst the heavy spring was very loose on worn posts. The result was a ok static idle and correct full advance but timing curve that advanced too quickly. I shortened the loop (effective length) on both springs and it cured the problem.
Something to check for perhaps.
Also on the subject of running vac advance; given the opportunity I would try it. Whilst the 2 litre bore is small and the plug is reasonably centrally located, it still burns petrol and air thus I believe would combust hotter/cleaner and more economically with a vac advance. I'd be interested to hear others thoughts on this.
