Does anyone know about the Jaguar XJR (Supercharged) cars, around the year
2000?
Seems like an amazingly cheap car. Are there big pitfalls to watch out for?
Thanks!
Andy.

I've always wondered the same thing. You get a lot of car for the money, especially in the UK market.

Mechanically, the biggest problem AFAIK: the cylinder walls of the V8 engine were treated with Nikasil that wore off, requiring a rebuild of the engine. However, the problem was cured by 2001 or so. A car may be affected if it has six digits in the VIN# at the end. If it's got five digits, the engine has steel liners instead.

According to some sources, the problem was not the Nikasil coating, but rather too many cold starts in sequence, leading to gasoline washing away the protective oil film on the inside of the cylinder walls.

Other problems, the upper cam chain tensioners break. Jag later replaced them with metal ones. It's unclear exactly when they did so, and the only way to find out what material is used in the engine of a particular car, is to physically check. If they are not metal, it's recommended to immediately replace them.

The water pump is a weak spot. Earlier versions didn't have a frots plug. If the pump does, its fine, if it doesn't - replace it.

If you want to go more in depth you'll find a lot of stuff about these well known problems via Google.

Good luck. That gen Jag is certainly still good looking, low four door cars.

I'd even say it is the last good looking Jaguar. I drive a Double Six from this generation on a more or less regular basis and won't buy a newer Jaguar, let alone the current XJ. So this will probably be my last car from this marque. This new model is certainly a very good vehicle on its own, but it has lost any specific Jaguar appeal for me. If it were not for the giant Jaguar logo attached to its back, the car could be mistaken for a Lexus or whatever.

Kind regards,
Markus Berzborn

The Jaguar is a looker, but this is a better car if you can get past how bland it looks and it's a hell of a lot of car for the money.

A Bristol body on this cars running gear would be a S6 and more ! Can anyone build me one ?

2003 VOLKSWAGEN PHAETON 6.0 W12 4MOTION LWB 4DR [5 SEAT] AUTO SUPERB BARGA

It may even work out cheaper if the holes line up.

I looked at one two months ago, a diesel. I nearly bought it. For once I
let my head rule! The write ups however were poor with horrendous
maintenance cost and complications. Bought an E class instead and so far
very happy

I have the E320 diesel estate and it is the best practical car I have ever had and not much slower than my old S600 !

Amazing car and the same engine goes in the Chrysler so maybe ?..... No that would be too sensible :-)

Not necessary, Bentley already builds such a car. It's called the Continental GT.

Markus
