6 cylinder engine colours
 

Just thought I'd repost this, (see below) as it didn't get a response first
time around.
Wondering, as I seem to get rather spasmodic forum postings, if either it
didn't get through, no one knows, or I've been excommunicated .............

I would add that the engine concerned was fitted to the one off FN cabriolet
they produced in 1951.
FN may I suppose have painted or repainted the engine themselves

The Bristol engine in my Frazer Nash is a light green-grey. Sorry,
don't know the color name, but looks close enough to the other
engines I've seen. I'll email Barry Leitch and see if he has a record of this.

What is the current colour of the external surface of the block?
It is always difficult to describe colours by email but the original colour
of all Bristol 6 cylinder blocks that I have seen is a pale green/grey
similar to many lathes & mills made in the 40's & 50's .
The inside surface of the block should be painted in a dark red colour.
I'll try to find a photo of one and post it on the forum later .

This came up a while ago when a member from Switzerland wanted to know what
colour to paint his block. All the blocks left the works the same colour,
this was a universal one used by many manufactures at the time, and I told
him that Sulzer in Switzerland used it for one and to see if he could
obtain some.
There are some dealers offering engine paints, of course it is not easy to
match as they have names such as (duck egg) but they usually have a spot of
colour on the tin. So, if you can find a photo or a car with the original
colour a green/grey you should be able to find some at a good dealers.

Many thanks to all who answered my plea for info on 2 litre engine colours.

I'm pleased to find out that I painted mine the right colour a while back.

I've been trying to see if the photos of my engine that I loaded up onto the
website some time ago, are still there but I don't seem to be able to get
into the members section. I guess I've not remembered my ID and password
correctly, as I haven't visited for a long time.

Anyway, thank you very much once again.

Did the question of engine colour get resolved. Using my block I got a match to a Pratt and Lambert colour Sage Gray 1427. I have also heard the block described by otheres as French Grey. What I have not been able to do is find is a manufacturer of a high quality engine enamel who is willing to match this colour. Any thoughts?

Why not call / email In racing in Nottingham or Spencer Lane Jones and ask them what they use - I just use an engine enamel that looks close from a specialist at my local auto jumble - seems to be bomb proof ! Does it matter that much, as long as it looks right and works ?

Yes, I will call, but its the curse of being a purist. It catches me out every time and as I have three engines to paint I would like to get it as right as possible. I have a match for the colour, its finding a high temperature enamel in that colour that is still proving difficult.
