Default Exhaust

I find the mufflers are on the low side as far as ground clearance goes. They are up close the heat shields so no extra room there.
Is this normal?

Yes, the V8 exhausts do suffer from that issue and are easy to damage if used off road such as when attending shows, the 603 has slightly better ground clearance than some of the earlier cars and the previous owner of mine had made skid pan/guards for the main silencers that would have done a 4x4 justice.
While looking at mufflers ( silencers for fellow UK dwellers ) to fit on a Rolls Royce I have with an American diesel engine I found some on offer that already have this protection built in, while not as strong as the guards on my 603 the protection they give prevents the bottom edge of the mufflers catching on any obstacles.
Take comfort that they are not as close to the ground as an E-Type or Healey 3000.

Check out this skid guard on a 410 modified for rally use.

Couple of other points to consider:
1.Oval silencers are available in different cross-sections e.g. 4" x 9" or 5"x 8", the former obv giving a better ground clearance. You have the silencer tight to the heat shield, so can't go higher, so it may be worth checking what is fitted. 2.Overall ride height, esp at the front, which is prone to drooping.
