Bristol 403 Horn Button

As some of you will know, I have launched into a DIY restoration of my newly acquired 403. One of the multitude of smaller jobs was to recommission the horn button. I did this successfully yesterday but my question concerns the look of the button itself. It is dull and on the slighly brown side of black. Questions:-

1. Would it always have been like this?
2. If not, would it have matched the rim of the steering wheel?
3. If it needs renovation, is there a recognised method? (eg the one on my Austin-Healey 100 is typically renovated with india ink and shoe polish)

Any help appreciated before I do damage!!

Regards

Horn button

I believe it is made of Bakelite which I have found responds well to Solvol Autosol.
