I will definitely track a copy down.

There is yet another version of events in "The BMW Story" by Horst Monnich. He claims that Bristol promised BMW a share in the profits they made from making the Bristol 400, which he said was simply a BMW in everything but name. But then he also said that Aldington was appointed head of Bristol Aeroplane ...

Good Grief ! I have been unable to access the mighty BEEF Forum for months due to computer security programmes, but here I am again, and nothing has changed.

Lets be clear, LJK Setright's writing is intelligent and elegant, but his style does not suit all tastes. In terms of accuracy, remember he was not a trained engineer (his training was legal). But while there may be a few mistakes in the detail of his writing, whether technical engineeering errors, or errors of historical fact, they are as nothing compared to the immense body of work in which he tried to communicate the excitement and pleasure gained from both the use of, and understanding of, good engineering.

Culturally speaking, we need more from his mould.

Who doesn't have their foibles ? LJKS was human.

Clarkson, meanwhile, who is actually a very able man, wastes the immense opportunity given to him to 'educate' with purile entertainment instead.

Thor.

I think that's entirely fair and much better expressed than by me.

With regards to TV car programs and many magazines I can only quote
Barry Humphries: They bore an Ar-----e in a wooden horse. Clarkson and
the team realise this and poke fun at the whole scene very
successfully in my view, not everyone likes it, but enormous numbers
do. Fifth Gear anyone, or any of the others for that matter.

Thor,

Welcome back. It's good to have your reasoned opinion. Hope that doesn't
stir up too much trouble!

PERSPECTIVE

Thor - good points well expressed.
On Clarkson, I agree that he can be engaging. However, after watching
several shows in his series I find that his delivery is very formulaic.

Regards,

Brett

Just to clarify, I do not selectively allow or disallow any posts (or URL's in posts) on an individual basis. This means all posts from registered members of the site are allowed by default (they are processed automatically).

Please click here if you require more info about moderation on this site, or if you want to discuss this topic further (rather than doing so in this thread about LJKS).
