Conversion to halogen headlamps?

I needed to replace a sealed beam headlamp on my 411 today and had a look at converting to halogen lamps. The only ones the shop stocked had a much flatter lens profile. I brought a pair home to see what they would look like on the car, but they wouldn't fit without modifying the headlamp housing to accommodate the park light. That wouldn't be difficult but I didn't really want to do that just to see how they suited the car so I returned them to the shop and fitted a standard sealed beam unit which was a third of the price.

However, if one goes down the halogen path it is possible to fit higher wattage bulbs which may be of interest, but I am a bit concerned about how the flat lenses would look on the car.

Has anyone converted their headlamps to the "semi sealed" type with a separate halogen bulb?

If so what did you use, and was it worth the change?

Can you get non sealed halogen headlamps that look like the original lamps?

Kevin -
My 411 [the original production -1969/1970 - of the 411 models which was not
produced as a "Series 1"] has Lucas H4 sealed beams fitted, 'flat glass' as
you say and no modification was required.
I think they look better than the original!
They have been in use for some 25+ years without a failure.

I have Bosch 7" headlamps on the outer pair of my 410, which are rounded and not flat. IF you look at somehwere like Holdens they have an great deal of choice of 7" lights, both rounded and flat.

(I have 5.75" sealed beams in the middle, which I shall probably change to halogens as well, as the smaller sealed beams are becoming harder to find here now.)

My headlights are wired so all four run as both main and dip, through relays, which gives excellent visibility at night, but you do have to make sure all four lamps are correctly aligned to avoid dazzling other traffic.

Halogen lamps

Current Land Rover Defender Headlamps are rounded in shape, 7", they take an 'H4' replaceable halogen bulb, and they do not have any side or park light built in. Also available for these is a reasonably good conversion to Xenon, including both dip and full beam Xenon.

Thor.
