409 Engine Number & suspension query
 

Now safely have my 409 delivered from Victoria, via CEVA.
To get the rego here, I need to find the engine number on the unit, if it is stamped. Brass Bristol has a reference, but I have seen mention of the actual Chrysler no. being above starter motor on left hand side. Local cop will love that!

I also note the car sits 3 cm lower at rear on left hand side. Torsion bar adjusters were at same setting and whilst I can level the car by winding one right out, I wonder if the arm was put back one spline wrong when some rear supsn work was done.

Electric Kenlowe fan motor - any suggetsions for Aussie source? I have email UK in the meantime.

My query as regards the torsion bars looks to hav ebeen answered very well in the Lemnnon and Kent report found in the resources. The point about the threaded adjust be vulnerable will not be lost on me: better to have the slight amount of lopsideness than the damaged bolt!

I think the number on those A series engines is stamped on a vertical pad at the front of the block on the right hands side when looking at the front of the car, just below the cylinder head.

However I have a different engine in my 411 so I can't be sure. Maybe someone with 407-410 can confirm.

I have had a good look at the relatively large flat area under the head
that side without success. Perhaps a local Chrysler buff might be able to
assist. I note that the unit looks different from the 318 unit in a 1976
CL Regal.

The engine looks different to that in a Regal because the Regal almost certainly uses the LA Series 318 engine, made from 1967. Production of the LA commenced in 1964 with a 273. Whereas the engine in your car is the older 'A' Series (Poly-spherical Head) engine, which was made between 1957-66/67 and is largely forgotten about and/or ignored in modern Mopar circles.

Confusion arises because many people in the Mopar world call the LA Series engine, the "A Series"!

Having decided the 409's cylinder block was supposedly unmarked, I was about to stamp the serail number on the area that many said was the correct place- nearside under head.
Trying to manouvre so as to get a clean sharp blow, my eyes moved to the other engine side, where just behind the dipstick was the number all nicely stamped!
