Rear axle removal

1 Attachment(s)
Evening one and all.

I am trying to get the rear axle of my 406 to part company with the torsion arms so that I can remove the axle from the car. Everything else is detached. Is there a special tool/puller for this job? The fit is incredibly tight. I have removed the screw in female part, (no.10 in pic) but cannot get any sort of 'normal' puller anywhere near. I believe the same fitment was/is used across later models also.

Thanks a lot.

Dave,

After removing the screw in part #10 you should be able to push or lever the complete axle rearwards off the suspension. After removing these #10 you will have to realign the axle after refitting to the car.

The other way to remove the axle is to remove the swinging link suspension from the torsion bar arm with the correct puller. See attached drawing which is from the 400 - 403 Workshop manual . Even with this puller it can be difficult to separate the two.
If you make a puller I suggest you make the main bolt diameter quite a bit larger as you often need to hit the bolt with a hammer to seperate the two which are on a taper.

I hope this helps
Geoff

Thank you Geoff, that's really helpful. I am trying to avoid taking the arms off the swinging link, so will try to leverage things. Your attachment was a bonus, thanks a lot.

Happy days..4 foot bar and some heat and it's off. Those engineering tolerances are amazing. After all that I can't fit the replacement axle as the diff cover is different,(affecting the Watts linkage etc) so I've put a wanted ad out for a later diff cover.
